. boy, does that look good. the sun is shining here in new york city. first full day that we've seen of that in the last several days. of course, october 31st means it is halloween morning, but while a lot of people across the country and their children will be celebrating tonight, a lot of people in this part of the country will not. obviously their towns have been really hardly affected or hard hit by the hurricane and then tropical storm sandy, so it's going to be an unusual halloween for a lot of people. i'm matt lauer along with savannah guthrie and willie geist. we didn't do our halloween celebration here this morning, but our thoughts are with the people who are getting to celebrate. meanwhile, the destruction is evident. 6 million people or more are waking up without power today. you've got homes submerged all along the jersey shore, along the coastline of new york and connecticut. the president is going to get a firsthand look at this today as he tours some of the hardest hit portions of new jersey with the governor of that state, chris christie, so we're going to have more

. keith russell news 4. >> we're going to toss to a break right now. first, ocean city maryland, where again the waves are crashing out there. looks like there's someone on the beach maybe enjoying the pictures. trying to document this tremendous storm. >>> now, parts of lower manhattan, where the seawall there has already been topped by waves. you're looking at one of the ships there that is sort of out into the water, if you will. we know oftentimes, those ships are safer being away from the shore. >> we know the holland tunnel and brooklyn tunnel will close at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon. holland tunnel, brooklyn battery tunnel. jurisdictions up and down the east coast not taking any chances, making sure they are ready and don't cause any more problems by having these thoroughfares open for people who might be trying to drive. >> there are reports about significant street flooding in parts of the bronx and queens as well. the subway system shut down in subway city because of the concern about water coming down into the subways as well. >> tom kieran now with the latest. >> sandy has ta
still throughout the heartland here. upper 60s in kansas city. that blue, you can see that there. that first front is going to push into the appalachians there on wednesday. so cool air really starting to filter in. you can see that cool air moving into the great lakes. and now chicago, lower 50s, that's it for the daytime highs. not going to see the cold air get as far south as the last push did over the weekend. but you'll notice it around the great lakes. thursday, another front going to bring more cool air coming in from canada. high only at 51 in minneapolis on thursday. and chicago, back into the 60s on thursday. but that's not going to last as that cool air moves through and moves in. you have high pressure replacing that. now back down into the 50s in chicago. chance for rain in the northeast. the southwest, especially the mountains, with a chance of showers. the pacific northwest, after a huge dry stretch will be an increasing chance for rain. and the next system taking shape in the middle part of the country. going to see a chance for rain, mild air ahead of the system.

to bring to it live as it happens. first we want to check in with ann thompson who is in battery park city. one of new york city's most vulnerable flood areas. >> within the area mayor michael bloomberg held a press conference and urged new york towers stay on alert for the storm surge that we've been talking about that's expected to hit the city sometime between 6:30 and 10:00 tonight. high tide tonight in this area is scheduled at 8:50 and that's when everyone is really worried that the worst could happen because you got all this rain that is coming in. you got the rising sea level. it's somewhat calmer because the tide is going out. it will be coming back in and they expect it's already breached the lower end of the promenade here. it did that earlier this morning. it could be even far worse tonight. so mayor bloomberg once again told all those people who were in zone a the area that's been ordered to evacuate if you're still there for some reason you decided to ride out this storm and you can leave, leave now because it will be too late when the storm surge hits later tonight. they exp

of the history of natural museum. but first this is "today" on nbc. >>> the american museum of natural history is a very big draw in new york city, but the wear and tear of time left some of its most famous exhibits in need of a little repair. nbc's katy tur at at the museum where they are getting ready for a grand opening this weekend. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. thousands of people visit this museum every day and as you say the big draw is the north american hall of mammals where even in the 3-d imax world the displays still manage to lure you in. that being said been 70 years since the first display opened up. as anyone can attest time stops for no man or frozen animal, for that matter. it's not every day you see someone fluffing up a buffalo's hair or redyeing the coat of an eight-foot tall alaskan brown bear, but when faced with touching up the wild, it certainly does help if the animals are stuffed. inside these dioramas at the american museum of natural history, restorers got a chance to work in a world sealed off since the '40s, but while the animals stood still, tim
